In order to improve your TOEFL or IELTS scores, not only should you practice the material but try to listen to different dialects such as those from Canada, the UK, or Australia, since these are regularly featured in the listening test. This can be done through websites such as BBC News. Try to listen to news broadcasts and then make notes about what is being said. Then try to rephrase the report in your own words and then listen again to try to see how accurate you were. Another way to help is to try to listen to TV programs such as National Geographic or Discovery and hide the subtitles and make notes about what you hear. That will help train your ears to catch different accents at different speeds. |

I have been in Taiwan for over 7 years teaching a wide range of students. I am encouraged by the effort and commitment that many of these Taiwanese students possess when it comes to studying English. When students come prepared to classes my goal is to set the teaching environment in a way that students can get the most from their studies. The teaching environment is everything so the classes are focused, organized, useful, exciting, interesting and even funny and humorous. Mostly the classes are student focused where each student gets the much needed hands on practice to pass their TOEFL or IELTS exams or just to be successful in their future. I also like to keep students informed about current events and interesting topics that effect us all in our so called little global village. It sounds obvious but it's true: The key to speaking English is just to speak. Worry about the grammar, accent and intonation later! The more you speak, the more confident you'll feel!
Practice useful set phrases at home, in the shower, in front of the mirror – anywhere, everywhere! If you don't have any foreign friends, chat to your Taiwanese pals in English. Most of all, never be scared about making a fool of yourself. Oh, and read! Read as much as possible.
